A huge thank you to our generous donor, the Absolute Taste catering contractor for helping us ensure that surplus food from The Golf Open Championship was put to good use rather than going to waste.
Over a number of months, we worked closely with Absolute Taste to plan the collection of surplus food from the tournament site on the Monday following the Championship. Thanks to this careful planning and collaboration, a substantial quantity of perfectly good food was rescued and redistributed to support local communities across Southport.
Recognising the scale of the donation, we contacted colleagues at other food projects across the town to ensure as many people as possible could benefit. We were delighted to work alongside:
- Place2 Be, a community market based at St John Stone’s Church in Woodvale.
- The Birkdale Community Cupboard, an open-access food project on Longford Road in Birkdale.
- Shoreline Foodbank, a long-standing foodbank on Mornington Road.
- Southport Soup Kitchen, providing meals from London Street.
- Brighter Living, a health and wellbeing charity on Norwood Road.
By working together, we were able to ensure this incredible donation was shared across multiple organisations, extending its impact and helping even more local people while significantly reducing food waste. A further donation of suncream via R&A was gratefully received and will be distributed to our projects.
Richard Owens, CEO, said:
“I’m so pleased that we could act as the link and facilitator for all of this, so that our colleagues in other food projects in the town could benefit from this opportunity. Our Head of Logistics worked really hard on coordinating things and it was great to see waste reduced and even more of the value from The Golf Open Championship invested socially across our town.”
This initiative is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when businesses, event organisers and community organisations work together. It demonstrates the power of collaboration to reduce food waste, support local people and create a lasting positive impact.
To everyone who played a part—from the donor, Absolute Taste, to our dedicated Head of Logistics, staff team, volunteers and our partner food projects—thank you. Your generosity, teamwork and commitment have ensured that surplus food became a valuable resource for communities across Southport, proving that together we can make a real difference.
